The volunteers of Fruitland Peninsula Historical Society chose to recognize the influences of the past by creating the project called “This Place Matters,” inspired by the National Trust for Historic Preservation campaign. FPHS designed and purchased signs to place on selected properties each May, which is Historic Preservation Month. Each of the signs features a QR code that can be scanned with a mobile phone to open the webpage with history about the location. The entries are sourced from the listing of the Crescent City Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places and personal knowledge as well as other resources that are part of FPHS’s collection.
The Crescent City Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997, includes the homes, churches, schools, and other buildings that are listed on our website. You are welcome to view the complete application, which includes additional structures, by downloading this PDF.
In 2025, the City of Crescent City contracted with Historic Property Associates of St. Augustine to perform an update to the historic building survey. This project was financed in part with historic preservation grant assistance provided by the Bureau of Historic Preservation, Division of Historical Resources, Florida Department of State, assisted by the Florida Historical Commission.
This project included updates to the 218 contributing structures in the Crescent City Historic District as well as 133 structures that now qualify for historic status (pre-1975). The final report from the survey can be downloaded here.
As of August 2025, the city had applied for a small matching grant to finance the work to update the listing on the National Register of Historic Places. This may include expanding or changing the area covered by the Crescent City Historic District and adding an additional period of significance to encompass the post-WWII period.
