St. John the Baptist Catholic Chapel

Eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, this small architecturally significant chapel building is an example of late Gothic Revival style popular in the 19^th and early 20^th centuries. In the early days of Crescent City, the Roman Catholics in the area envisioned a place to worship. St. John the Baptist Catholic Church was formed in 1906, and Father Patrick Barry traveled by water or dirt road to say mass on Monday in one home or another.  In 1910, the Catholic population had increased, and a building was needed. With the aid of fundraisers, and a generous gift from James A. Howe, the chapel was built on the corner of Lemon Avenue and South Main Street at a cost of $2,000. Eventually, the little chapel became too small to hold the growing congregation and a new church was built south of Crescent City in 1959.  Mass is held daily at the chapel.
